Steve started his first aquarium with ocean water…

That he brought back from trips to Cape Cod with his dad, when he was just a boy. As he grew older, he realized there had to be a better way for people to set up a tank at home and to maintain it.

This belief led to his opening his first fish store in 1986, after he graduated from college. He went on to found several other well-known Chicago Area fish stores, before finally opening Fish Planet in Deerfield in 2003. He built his business around hand-selecting the healthiest fish possible and ensuring he and his staff were knowledgeable about all aspects of the aquarium hobby.

Steve also wanted to create a friendly shopping atmosphere for all ages and levels of hobbyists. He wanted everyone to feel welcome in his store. One of his proudest accomplishments is that he is now serving his customers’ “children’s children,” and he enjoys watching hobbyists take on new aquarium challenges and grow over the years.
